Bruce Jack Drenten


On Tuesday, July 28, 2020, Bruce Jack Drenten, of Middleville, loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather passed away at the age of 79. His final days were spent surrounded by family that Bruce had touched in some small way throughout his very memorable life. Bruce was born on November 14, 1940, in East Grand Rapids. He received his bachelor’s degree in Engineering from Western Michigan University and dedicated 30 years of Engineering to Steelcase in Grand Rapids. On April 22, 1977, he married the love of his life, Judy Drenten. They raised three beautiful children together: Terry, Tracie and Mark. Bruce had a passion for fishing, hunting and inventing. He was a quiet reserved man, who was an avid fisherman that enjoyed spending time on the open waters with the tranquil sounds of nature surrounding him. Bruce also enjoyed his time in the woods hunting in the quiet spaces of his property. He had an inspiring inventive soul and his many ideas and creations inspired generations of creators. Bruce’s ideas were always unique and valuable whether he was creating new designs for his work at Steelcase, inventing exceptional bird houses, or the many inventions to use around his property and home. Bruce was also a dedicated U.S. Army Veteran. His family was incredibly important to him and he always kept them close to his heart. They will always remember his laughter, stubbornness, quick wit, infectious smile, kind and compassionate spirit and courage to fight whatever life threw at him. He was the pillar of his family and was encircled by love, devotion, and will be greatly missed. Bruce was preceded in death by his parents, James and Anna Drenten, as well as his loving sister-in-law, Sheila Drenten. He is survived by his wife, Judy Drenten; his three children, Terry (Mike) Sanford, Tracie (Todd) Sparks, Mark (Debra) Drenten; his brother, Jimmy Drenten; sister, Jean (Bob) Potter; eight grandchildren; nine great grandchildren and several cousins, nieces, and nephews. A funeral service will be held on Friday, August 14, 2020, at Thornapple Valley Church, 2750 M-43, Hastings, MI, 49058, at 4 p.m. Everyone is welcome to join for a “Celebration of Life” gathering immediately following until 9 p.m. at 608 S.
